Start Page Numbers From Page 3: Numbering Reports With a Cover and TOC

A cover page and table of contents usually shouldn't carry a visible page number, but the pages after them should start counting from 1 — or continue from wherever your front matter left off. This is standard in academic papers, theses, and formal reports, and it trips people up because most simple "add page numbers" tools only offer one option: number every page starting from 1.

The two common patterns

• Skip numbering entirely on the cover and TOC, then start at 1 on the first content page.
• Number front matter (cover, TOC, abstract) with lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii), then switch to Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) starting on the first body page — the convention most academic style guides use.

For the Roman-numeral-then-Arabic pattern, the practical approach is to number the document in two passes: run the front matter pages through with Roman-style formatting if your source document already has it typed in (since automatic Roman numeral generation isn't built into every numbering tool), then run the body pages through separately starting the Arabic count at 1.
